Hope Notes 8/1/18

August 1, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

I feel like we’re getting into the thick of summer right about now. The heat and humidity have made their presence known and people are flocking to bodies of water for relief. Those without air conditioning seek out malls and movies for a blast of cold air. Lots of folks are going on vacation. Summer is the time we often give ourselves permission to take it a little bit easy and give ourselves a break from the usual routine. But let’s not break our routine of coming to church. I would hope we don’t feel we need a vacation from church! It’s a vital part of our spiritual walk. Hebrews 10:25 cautions us about “not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” It’s important that we continue to meet with one another regularly on Sunday mornings; how can we encourage each another if we are not connecting? And call me crazy, but I don’t think God actually takes a vacation! If He never sleeps nor slumbers (Psalm 121:4), I highly doubt He is taking a break from being Lord over all! Sunday morning is a precious time set aside to focus on our God and to worship Him, to have fellowship with each other, and also to support those who are ‘up front’ pouring their heart and souls into bringing us God’s Word and Worship. And hey, guess what? We have air conditioning so the heat doesn’t even matter! (I actually know a small church who closes down in the summer because they have no air conditioning.) What a blessing that we can continue coming to Hope, no matter the weather, no matter the time of year! The air is cool, the worship is hot, the preaching is spot on, and you’ll find God’s presence here every Sunday. But only if YOU are here as well!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Fishers of Men (Matthew 4:18-25)
Have you ever tried the arcade game with a hanging claw that drops down into a pile of prizes and grabs whatever is where it lands? Some of the newer versions of this game let you play until you win, but for many years, it was rare that the claw returned with a prize. The player tried to align the claw over the desired item and then hoped that when it dropped and closed, it would catch whatever was targeted. When Jesus asked men to be His followers, He used the imagery of fishing for men. Not quite the same random grabbing as the claw game, but still challenging. But there’s a reason Jesus used this idea: the men He was recruiting were fishermen. He basically was saying, “Come use all of your skills for the greatest purpose of your life.” When we follow Jesus, we all become fishers of men. Are we doing that? And if not, what would it take for us to start?
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

“The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”

Unable to make it out for Wednesday Night? Bible Study recordings are now available on our Podcast AND YouTube Channel! To listen to a recording, visit hopechristianfellowship.org/ messages, or subscribe to our Podcast on iTunes. Or you can watch on our YouTube channel “Hope Christian Fellowship.”

We’re on hiatus for the summer, but we have a lot planned for the fall!
“Thinking Out Loud” Series: Starting in September, we’re going to take Wednesday nights and talk through together as a church family some of the pressing cultural issues of today. We may disagree with one another, but we’ll have the discussion anyway. We’ll treat one another with respect and work towards understanding each other. And in the end, we’ll pray that the Lord will lead each one of us in our response to these issues. We want to have open hearts to God’s direction. And we want our church to be a place where we can discuss anything – even when we disagree – with the love we’re called to have for each other.
Special Note: We’re setting aside one of these nights as a discussion of the #MeToo movement. Pastor Mark is asking anyone who has experienced sexual aggression or misconduct, and would be willing to briefly share with us, to let us know. Reach out to Dave Hallahan (dmhallahan5@gmail.com) for more details. Thanks in advance for your courage!
