Hope Notes 7/11/18

July 11, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

Want to know what Bible verse has been haunting me lately? Once I read it, I couldn’t get it out of my mind. Even now as I place the words on this page, it taunts me. Here you go: “The LORD our God said to us at Horeb, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain. Break camp and advance…..” (Deuteronomy 1:6-7). For someone like me who’s exactly enamored with change, that is one frightening verse! And here’s the thing – you can take that verse and apply it to so many different situations in your life. I feel like it could be used at almost any point in our lives! It could mean a literal moving on from a place, a job, a relationship, or a situation. It could also mean letting go of a habit, an emotional crutch, or perhaps a memory. We all have memories that we carry with us; some good, some bad. They can shape who we are as individuals. But they can be quite capricious, and not always reliable. The funny thing about them is you never know which moments will stay with you and which will fall away! I am willing to be that, if you stop and meditate on this verse, each and every one of you will find something the Lord is telling you to ‘break camp’ and move forward from. I personally am struggling to let go of a memory. It’s hard to ‘advance’, but here’s the Good News. God hasn’t simply told us we need to do this, He also offers the promise of His help and His presence. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear….” (Psalm 46:1-2) Another comforting verse is found in Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” So……….what mountain you have overstayed your welcome at? Let us pack up our ‘baggage’, our fears, and our excuses; break camp and move towards the place in our faith that God wants us to be.

We have the privilege of coming together as a church family, as brothers and sisters in Christ, and worshiping our Lord together. While we can all do this every day of the week, and music is not the main way we worship, there is something immeasurably precious in the times we sing and give praise to the Lord together. Every time we set aside a day as a church to worship, God moves in powerful and unimaginable ways. So let’s lift our hearts together as we come to worship our Savior and King!
MESSAGES AVAILABLE Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

“Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

Unable to make it out for Wednesday Night? Bible Study recordings are now available on our Podcast AND YouTube Channel! To listen to a recording, visit hopechristianfellowship.org/ messages, or subscribe to our Podcast on iTunes. Or you can watch on our YouTube channel “Hope Christian Fellowship.”

We’re on hiatus for the summer, but we have a lot planned for the fall!
“Thinking Out Loud” Series: Starting in September, we’re going to take Wednesday nights and talk through together as a church family some of the pressing cultural issues of today. We may disagree with one another, but we’ll have the discussion anyway. We’ll treat one another with respect and work towards understanding each other. And in the end, we’ll pray that the Lord will lead each one of us in our response to these issues. We want to have open hearts to God’s direction. And we want our church to be a place where we can discuss anything – even when we disagree – with the love we’re called to have for each other.
Special Note: We’re setting aside one of these nights as a discussion of the #MeToo movement. Pastor Mark is asking anyone who has experienced sexual aggression or misconduct, and would be willing to briefly share with us, to let us know. Reach out to Dave Hallahan (dmhallahan5@gmail.com) for more details. Thanks in advance for your courage!
