Hope Notes 6/20/18

June 20, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

I used to teach a women’s Bible study many years ago and there was one woman there who would regularly report on whether or not a certain prayer had ‘worked’. Meaning she had gotten the desired answer. She would often ask me to pray for her because my prayers ‘worked better’. I hope that sounds totally ridiculous to you. Because it is. Prayer is not some magic formula that gives the desired result if we say it exactly right with the proper holy wording. Remember, we have the Holy Spirit who can bring the deepest cries of our heart to the Lord when we can’t even find the words to say. “……the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” (Romans 8:26) It also doesn’t matter WHO is doing the praying! Sometimes people have the mistaken idea that a pastor’s prayers will always be heard (don’t they have a direct line to God?), while the rest of us have a 50/50 chance of getting through to the Big Guy. Again, I hope this sounds crazy to you all! Scripture gives us many assurances that God hears our prayers. How about this: “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer.” (1Peter 3:12) The Psalmist declared, “As for me, I call to God…..and he hears my voice.” (Psalm 55:15-16) But what about those prayers of ours that God just doesn’t seem to be answering? Well, we know from Scripture that He DOES hear us, no matter how simple our cry. In fact, He hears more than our words, He is listening to our hearts. An unanswered prayer is simply an opportunity for continued conversation with our Lord; for a deepening of our faith and trust in Him. I have some prayers that make me feel as though the words themselves are worn out from years of recitation. But I have confidence that God hears them, although I confess I often wish He would help me understand the process of waiting! This much we know to be true – “The righteous cry out and the Lord hears them.” (Psalm 34:17) So it’s not a matter of whether He will hear us or not, it’s a matter of whether we will wait on Him, continue praying, and then accept His answer.

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Helping Those in Need (Psalm 41)
We all know we should do it. Sometimes we do, and other times we don’t. Maybe we give ourselves a break because we know all of our own struggles, so we excuse ourselves from helping others in need. Yet, we want God to rush to our aid in times of need. David writes this psalm and begins it with some words about God’s desire for us to help those in need. This concept is a huge theme throughout Scripture – to such a degree that it influenced how the Israelites harvested their crops! If it is true that we are weak and that we need help, then it should also be true that we recognize our calling to be responsive to the weak around us. No matter what they look like, what they’ve done, or how many times they’ve fallen, our heart should mirror the heart of our Father for those in need.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!
