Hope Notes 5/9/18

May 9, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,

Some thoughts and a little testimony regarding Mother’s Day. My mom died almost a year to the day one year before our daughter Emily was born, 30 years ago! I remember how hard that first Mother’s Day without her was. But the next Mother’s Day came when Emily was only a week old. God had given me a beautiful baby girl to love on. It was an emotional day – joy at being a new mom tempered with some sorrow that my daughter would never get to meet her Grammy. But let me tell you what our God, “the Father of mercies and God of all comfort” (2Corinthians 1:3) did. Although the two would never meet, He granted some of her spirit to be passed on! When Emily was born, one of the first things we noticed were her dimples. Now, that may not seem like anything special to you, but here’s the thing; no one on either side of our family as far back as we could remember had dimples. And my mom just absolutely loved them! She used to tell me they was where angles had kissed the baby’s cheeks. I know it’s silly, but it made me feel like those dear little dimples were a kiss from my mom. As Emily grew, she exhibited more and more of my mom’s personality traits and talents. (I don’t know why, but those talents all skipped a generation, lol!) The older she gets, the more I see my mom in her. It brings me comfort to know that a little bit of my mom’s sparkle remains here on earth. Proverbs 23:25 says, “May she who gave you birth be happy”. And I am! I’m sure that those of you who have lost their moms know the pangs of sorrow Mother’s Day can bring. And those of you who are mothers know the joy your children bring you. Joy and sorrow are often close companions. Bitter and sweet can go hand in hand. If you are feeling sad this Mother’s Day, allow our gracious God to comfort you. “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18) And let’s be sure to give Him praise and thanks for our children. “Children are a blessing and a gift from the Lord.” (Psalm 127:3) God is the Author of it all – the joy and the sorrow, the bitter and the sweet. Not just on Mother’s Day, but every day. So thankful that He knows just what we need for all of it!

SUNDAY MORNINGS
SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE – Eve’s Value (Genesis 1:27-28: 2:20-23: 3:20)
On this day, we honor and celebrate our mothers and the role of being a mother. God designed this role to be an example of His care and love for each of us. And He made us helplessly dependent on our moms when we were born. Yet the world has taken to treating women like property or trash. We objectify them and use them in media and around the world as sex objects. This affront to God’s heart and design for women matters to God’s people. We’re going to take a look at the value that women and moms have. And then we’re going to have a chance to join the fight to stand up for women who are helplessly trapped by those who would use and abuse them. In honor of our mothers, let’s stand with millions of mothers around the world who don’t know where their daughters are today. And let’s do something about it.

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with. Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up! “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday. So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us. We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPIRITUAL GROWTH

WORKSHOP WEDNESDAYS – COMING IN JUNE!
We’ll be taking a break from our regular bible study in the month of June and having Workshop Wednesdays. There are six classes to choose from. Check them out below and sign-up in the lobby!

WEDNESDAY CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
CHICK & BUNNY DOUGHERTY – GROWING THROUGH LIFE’S CHALLENGES
God never promised to exempt Christians from common human experiences such as rejection, loss, depression, doubts, injustices, etc. In this workshop we’ll read about several characters in the bible that faced the same challenges we do today. They we’ll take a look at Psalm 116 and learn about God’s repeated assurance: “I hear you. I am with you.” Life’s challenges can strengthen our faith if we allow the biblical examples God gave us to show us how.

MIKE HARTWELL – KNOW WHAT YOU BELIEVE
Are you a long time believer but feel like you still aren’t fully rooted when it comes to the ins and outs of Christianity? In this class we’ll be taking a look at Paul Little’s book to discover the core beliefs we as Christians should be able to understand and share with others. We’ll discuss things like angels and demons, what place the bible and church should have in our lives, and God as the trinity.

DEB MCCARSON – REDISCOVERING PURPOSE: INVESTING THE BURIED TALENT
At times we lose sight of our purpose. This may happen during times of transition, soul-searching, or after traumatic experiences. Perhaps we just aren’t sure how God wants to use us. Jesus taught us we are not to “hide our light under a bushel,” yet at times we might feel like we can not shine as brightly as we should. We’ll be exploring what our purpose is and what God requires of us through a series of expressive writing prompts and bible study. Through this we will attempt to free ourselves from the things that hold us back from knowing our true purpose.

DANA OTT – HOLY ROAR: THE PRACTICE OF PRAISE & WORSHIP
When is the last time you sensed the presence of God in your worship? Whether alone with Him in a quiet space or in
corporate worship with the family of God? Maybe it’s time for a fresh perspective and an opportunity to deepen your practice of praise! We’ll dig into Darren Whitehead’s book and uncover the transformational language of worship and praise to God!

MARK OTT – THE BASICS OF CHRISTIANITY
Are you just starting out your journey with Jesus? This workshop will take you from those very first steps through what the bible has to say on some of the main topics of Christianity. You’ll see it for yourself and feel like you know these things firsthand. Also, if you’re a believer who would be interested in using this study to share your faith with others, come out and join us through this series.

RYAN WINSTEL- KNOWING GOD’S WILL (A continued study)
Ever wonder if you are following God’s plan for your life or not? God wants you to know what His will is for you. Join us as we
continue to dive into what God’s word says about what it takes for us to align ourselves with God’s will for our lives. If you missed the workshop last year, don’t worry. There will be a review and notes for you to take home to catch up.

But we’re going to also to invite everyone to consider honoring their mothers by standing up for mothers around the world who don’t know where their daughters are on this day. And for young women and girls who could grow up to be great moms, but don’t have that chance because they are caught in modern day slavery. We’re welcoming Tim Nelson, International Development Director from Hope for Justice who is flying in from the UK to be with us this morning. He will join Pastor Mark in presenting an opportunity to take this Mother’s Day and make it resonate beyond flowers and cards into stuff that can change people’s lives and eternities!

We’re a family here at Hope and we love to share in each others joys and even sorrows. We want to make sure that your important life moments get shared so we can lift one another up in prayer, celebrate together, and at times cry together.
