Hope Notes 2/14/18

February 14, 2018

Dear Friends of Hope,
Has this ever happened to you?  You’re standing in line somewhere or in a waiting room at the doctor’s office, minding your own business, when someone gets right into your bubble and begins to tell you their life story. This happens to all members of my family quite frequently.  We joke that we must have some kind of invisible sign that says ‘come bear your soul to me’.  I understand this occurring with close friends – those with whom you’ve built up a relationship of trust.  But a stranger?  We are all somewhat introverted and don’t always want to have a discussion with someone we don’t even know.  I used to get annoyed, but then I decided it was a God thing.  James 1:19 says we are to be ‘quick to listen and slow to speak’ so I figured the least I should do is listen.  But God not only has told me to listen, He also desires that I should speak.  1Peter 3:15 instructs us to ‘always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have’.  So I decided that I would find some way to interject Jesus into the conversation instead of simply nodding politely and hoping they go away!  It does help to think of the situation NOT as some random stranger intruding on my personal space and time but rather as a God given opportunity to speak on His behalf.  “He who hears you hears me”. (Luke 10:16a)  I don’t always succeed – sometimes I chicken out and sometimes I just shut down.  And not everyone is necessarily ‘needing’ to hear or open to hear.  But at least I can feel like I’m trying to turn the incident into a God honoring moment.  And sometimes I find that my personal space has been quickly returned to me (wink wink)!

SUNDAY MORNINGS
THE FOOL (Psalm 14)

Mark Twain once said, “It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.” Surely, we can all relate to the idea of being so certain of something only to find out we were absolutely wrong. This same idea plays out in people spiritually.  People are so sure that there is no God, or that all roads lead to Him.  However, David writes that we would be fools to act, think, or speak like God does not exist. And the stakes are incredibly high.  People all tend to reject God in some way, and a day comes for each person when they will be filled with dread.  If we recognize that we answer to God Almighty, our dread in this life can lead us to His saving grace.  Otherwise, He is only our judge and we will not fare well before Him!

MESSAGES AVAILABLE
Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)  Bob Baumiester leads this prayer time – feel free to contact him with any questions: rbaumiester@gmail.com.

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

UPDATED CHURCH WEBSITE
Check out our updated church website! We’ve given the site a reboot to make it easier for you to stay connected to what’s happening and how to serve here at Hope. Two places you’ll want to be sure to check out are the “Starting Out” menu if you’re new, and the “Going Deeper” menu if you’re looking to get plugged in to serving. Visit hopechristianfellowship.org to see these pages and more!

CARD COLLECTION BOX
Our Card Collection boxes are located in the front of the auditorium.   If you have a prayer request, you can fill out the orange  Prayer Request card and our Prayer Team will lift it up in prayer.  If anyone has a need or knows of someone in need, one way to let us know is to drop a yellow Needs Request card into the box.  Our guests can fill out the blue Visitor Card and drop it in the box. All three cards are right there with the collection box – how easy is that?!

GIVING AT HOPE
We make it easy to give as the Lord leads.  There are envelopes and a drop box in the back of the auditorium.  If you prefer to give electronically, we have online and texting options.  Just go to our website and check them out!  www.hopechristianfellowship.org

HAVE OUR ELDERS PRAY WITH YOU
The New Testament has this wonderful ministry for the elders of a church – PRAYER. And we’d like to offer it to anyone who is in need of healing (physical or otherwise) or who needs the power of God to be at work in their lives in a special way.  If you or anyone you know would like to take advantage of this ministry, contact Pastor Mark to set up a time after one of our Sunday services for the elders to pray over you.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE
CONNECTING AND SERVING AT HOPE
