Hope Notes 10/18/17

October 18, 2017

Dear Friends of Hope,
Is there a door in your life that needs closing?  And I don’t mean the door to that messy spare room!  We all have doors that sometimes remain open when they really should be closed. And locked!  Sometimes trusting God means we not only close the door, we need to lock it and hand the key to Him.  Who better to hold our keys than the One who holds the keys to the kingdom of heaven (Matthew19:19) and the keys of death and Hades (Rev 1:18)??!!
I myself find it hard to close doors.  On relationships, on opportunities, on old habits.  I always want to leave it open just a sliver; just in case something happens that would change the situation.  Or the person.  I’m betting you know exactly what I’m talking about.  But you know what I’ve learned over the years?  That sometimes, when we just can’t bear the thought of slamming a door shut, and we procrastinate and excuse our delay…………God Himself will shut the door.   And you know what else I’ve learned?  That even locked doors can be unlocked by God.  Situations or relationships that we thought locked away and impossible to reopen can be redeemed by our Father in His perfect timing.  Listen to the words of Revelation 3:7:  “These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”  I absolutely love the assurance and freedom promised in that verse!  I need to prayerfully consider all these points I just made the next time I’m standing in front of a door, trembling with key in hand, seeking the courage to close it, lock it, and hand the key to God.

Sexual Ethics Sermon Series:  Culture vs God – Who’s Right About Sex?
It seems that today, more so than any time we can remember, sexual issues are being reshaped from traditional ideas.  In some sense, a fresh look is always good.  However, as Christians, we need to be sure we actually know what our Creator has to say about these topics.  We probably hear vastly more argument and logic from our culture than we search out from what God has said on the topic.  Since these are really important topics, let’s take the next few weeks and look at what we can find in the Bible to address today’s sexual controversies.

A Wandering World (Ephesians 4:15; Philippians 2:3-4; Matthew 15:13-20; Deuteronomy 22:5; Psalm 139:13-16; Genesis 1:27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; Romans 1:24-27; Leviticus 18:21-23)
Advertisers believe that if they show you something often enough, and sing its praises loud enough, eventually you’ll believe what they are telling you and want what they are selling.  When you look at that concept on paper, it seems so harsh and insulting.  And yet data shows it to largely be true.  We like what we are familiar with and are predisposed to believe what we hear often, as long as it makes some kind of sense to us.  Our world is having a similar effect on us as Christians as they hammer home their ideas and thinking on sexuality.  It is understandable that their ideas and arguments will ring true to us since we are human just like they are.  However, it is vital that we walk by faith and not by sight.  So, we’re going to look into some of the passages in Scripture that teach on sexuality – specifically in the areas of LGBT stuff.  Come and see for yourself what the Bible has to say about these current issues and decide for yourself what a Christ follower should do in these areas.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)  Bob Baumiester leads this prayer time – feel free to contact him with any questions: rbaumiester@gmail.com.

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.”

We are taking a look at Hosea and the story of “Redeeming Love” that’s presented in this book.  Childcare is provided.
PLEASE NOTE:  We will be meeting in the Youth Room while our choir practices for the Christmas Cantata.

Having fun packing shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child?
Here’s how to make this easy & fun:  CHOOSE a boy or girl and the age category.  FILL with a quality ‘wow’ item, then add other fun toys, hygiene items, and school supplies. PRAY for the child who will receive your gifts; you can include a personal note & photo.  If you’d like, you can donate $9 online and receive a tracking label to discover the destination of your shoe box. www.smaritanspurse.org/operation-christmas-child/follow-your-box
Finished shoe boxes are due back at Hope by Sunday, November 12th.

It’s time to start preparing for how we can share and celebrate God’s greatest gift! Whether you are a trained vocalist or just someone who enjoys singing, we’d love to have you. (Ages 9th grade and up.)This year’s cantata, “What A Beautiful Name” will be performed Dec.10th for the both the 9 and 11 o’clock services.
NOTE:  Choir practice has begun (Wednesdays at 7:00 pm) but you can still join!  If you have any questions see Dana Ott or contact her at danaott@ hopechristianfellowship.org.

HopeKids are gearing up for another great year of celebrating Jesus’ birth, through a musical program!  We need volunteers who are willing to help with all of the preparation including teaching the songs and script, supervising practices and putting the program together.  Please contact Matt Russell if you are interested.

Attention Hope Partners! Now is the time to place your votes for 2018 Deacon team members and Leadership team members. Remember, only partners can vote and we need everyone to participate! Voting forms and instructions are located on the sign-up table in the lobby. Forms are due by the end of October. For any questions, see Pastor Mark.

Make sure to pick-up a copy of the new directory addendum in the lobby. Add this to your current directory to ensure you have contact information for new families or people who’s information has changed. If you don’t have a copy of the original directory, we have some available in the lobby. See Emily DiLorenzo if you have any questions.

Our Card Collection boxes are located in the front of the auditorium.   If you have a prayer request, you can fill out the orange  Prayer Request card and our Prayer Team will lift it up in prayer.  If anyone has a need or knows of someone in need, one way to let us know is to drop a yellow Needs Request card into the box.  Our guests can fill out the blue Visitor Card and drop it in the box. All three cards are right there with the collection box – how easy is that?!

Make sure to check out Hope Share on our website – it’s a place to share things we no longer use and to look for things we need!  It’s easy to upload photos of items you’d like to give away and to search for that special item you just might need!

We make it easy to give as the Lord leads.  There are envelopes and a drop box in the back of the auditorium.  If you prefer to give electronically, we have online and texting options.  Just go to our website and check them out!  www.hopechristianfellowship.org

The New Testament has this wonderful ministry for the elders of a church – PRAYER. And we’d like to offer it to anyone who is in need of healing (physical or otherwise) or who needs the power of God to be at work in their lives in a special way.  If you or anyone you know would like to take advantage of this ministry, contact Pastor Mark to set up a time after one of our Sunday services for the elders to pray over you.

There are so many places to connect and serve here at Hope. There truly IS ‘something for everyone’ and we want to make it easy for you to know all the different options!  You can check out our Ministry and Service Opportunities brochure (on the glass tables) and also keep your eye on this section as we post any pressing needs.

For all Kids Ministry scheduling, please refer to the Planning Center or contact your team leader.
