Hope Notes 10/5/17

October 5, 2017

Dear Friends of Hope,
Isn’t it funny how hearing a particular song can immediately propel you back into the time and place in your life where you first listened to it?  Some songs have such a powerful sensory memory to me that I don’t just go back to an era, I can recall smells and sensations.  It is well documented that music has a powerful effect on people.  It has been used to speed healing, to relieve depression, to calm a frightened soul.  Stranger uses include playing a particular type of music to entice us to buy  more or to linger longer at a restaurant.  Music is an inherent part of our world.  I find it interesting that the longest book in the Bible is a song book (Psalms)!  Want a fun Bible trivia fact?  The very first mention of music in Scripture is found in Genesis 4:21 – “His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute”. (You’re welcome.)
For believers, the lyrics in Christian songs help remind us of God’s love for us, His forgiveness, His presence, etc.  The gospel message is sprinkled liberally throughout those songs.  I suppose it is for those very reasons I find that I listen mostly to only Christian music.  I have nothing against secular musicians (although many of their lyrics leave me speechless) and have a few that I enjoy.  But time and time again, I will choose Christian music over all else.
Music is the soundtrack not just to our lives, but to our thought lives as well.  Sometimes I don’t even realize that I’m ‘singing’ a song in my head until I’m sitting quietly and then…….there it is.  Words straight out of Scripture, set to music.  What a beautiful thing to fill my head and my heart with!  It’s always running in the background of my head throughout the day.  Without me even being consciously aware of it, God’s Word is being spoken straight to my heart.  And since “Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks” (Luke 6:45), I want my heart to be filled with the things of God, not the things and thoughts of this world!

Sexual Ethics Sermon Series:  Culture vs God – Who’s Right About Sex?
It seems that today, more so than any time we can remember, sexual issues are being reshaped from traditional ideas.  In some sense, a fresh look is always good.  However, as Christians, we need to be sure we actually know what our Creator has to say about these topics.  We probably hear vastly more argument and logic from our culture than we search out from what God has said on the topic.  Since these are really important topics, let’s take the next few weeks and look at what we can find in the Bible to address today’s sexual controversies.

Foundations (Romans 5:127:25; Psalm 145:17; James 1:12-17; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a) – COMMUNION
Where should we start on our discussion about how a Christian should think and act sexually in our world today?  Let’s start at the beginning and touch on a few foundational truths. Without these, we have no footing in today’s swirling obsession with sex and sexuality.  It is vital that we have a good grip on these concepts and that we are able to express them simply and clearly whenever we need to talk about right and wrong from a believer’s perspective.  Do you know that a heterosexual is no more prone to do the right thing than a homosexual?  This comes from a very basic understanding of Scripture and our spiritual condition.  But so often we don’t grasp this reality.  And do you firmly and unshakably believe in the goodness and right-ness of God?  How about your understanding of love?  We’re going to address all of these topics as we dive into the deep end on the cultural wars all around us.

Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE. Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website: www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME – 8:30 in Pastor Mark’s Office
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)  Bob Baumiester leads this prayer time – feel free to contact him with any questions: rbaumiester@gmail.com.

PRAYER HUDDLE – 8:40 to 8:45 for Both Services
The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp in the Youth Room to pray together for God’s power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

“Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.”

YOUTH GROUP – Sundays from 6:00 – 8:00

Our middle school and high school groups meet right here at church! Come out for another amazing year as we grow closer together and closer to God!

Go Zone is our Sunday Morning kid’s service, planned especially for 1st – 5th graders. Our goal is to encourage the kids to live with their focus on “GOing for GOD, GOing for GROWTH, and GOing FOREVER!” This service includes worship, games, and exploring important biblical truths in fun and creative ways before heading off to Sunday school.
Follow HopeKids! Ministries on Facebook at: facebook.com/HCFHopeKid

We have an all new, revamped HopeKids! Hangout for our K-5th graders! Their’s more time to hangout and more time to be in the Word! We have an exciting series of themed nights, games, snacks & skits planned, along with a new challenging Bible series called, “The Choice is Yours!” We also have a fantastic program for the 3-5 year olds that they wont want to miss!  Come and see what it’s all about!

Christmas will soon be upon us, and come October, HopeKids will be gearing up for another great year of celebrating Jesus’ birth, through a musical program!  We need volunteers who are willing to help with all of the preparation including teaching the songs and script, supervising practices and putting the program together.  Please contact Matt Russell if you are interested.

For the month of September, we averaged $7695 per week, bringing our annual weekly average up to $7458.  While we met our weekly target of $7675 per week for the month of September, we’re still a bit behind on the year.  Since we all believe in what God is doing at Hope, let’s be passionate, generous, devoted and sacrificial in our giving.  More people need Jesus and the redeeming power He offers, and we get to be His ambassadors. We are excited about what’s ahead, but giving is a part of the fuel for the mission, so let’s each seek the Lord on what we can do!

Attention Hope Partners! Now is the time to place your votes for 2018 Deacon team members and Leadership team members. Remember, only partners can vote and we need everyone to participate! Voting forms and instructions are located on the sign-up table in the lobby. Forms are due by the end of October. For any questions, see Pastor Mark.

Make sure to pick-up a copy of the new directory addendum in the lobby. Add this to your current directory to ensure you have contact information for new families or people who’s information has changed. If you don’t have a copy of the original directory, we have some available in the lobby. See Emily DiLorenzo if you have any questions.

We make it easy to give as the Lord leads.  There are envelopes and a drop box in the back of the auditorium.  If you prefer to give electronically, we have online and texting options.  Just go to our website and check them out!  www.hopechristianfellowship.org

The New Testament has this wonderful ministry for the elders of a church – PRAYER. And we’d like to offer it to anyone who is in need of healing (physical or otherwise) or who needs the power of God to be at work in their lives in a special way.  If you or anyone you know would like to take advantage of this ministry, contact Pastor Mark to set up a time after one of our Sunday services for the elders to pray over you.

There are so many places to connect and serve here at Hope. There truly IS ‘something for everyone’ and we want to make it easy for you to know all the different options!  You can check out our Ministry and Service Opportunities brochure (on the glass tables) and also keep your eye on this section as we post any pressing needs.
