Hope Notes 6/9/16

June 9, 2016

Dear Friends of Hope ~

Last week after worship, I started thinking about all the songs we sing and the words we are singing.  We are offering up those words to God. I thought, “What if we really don’t mean what we’re saying, but are simply singing out of mindless repetition?”  You know how it is when you know the words to something so well that you’re able to sing along and yet find your thoughts drifting elsewhere?  (Please tell me I’m not the only one who ever does that!)  It’s important to truly focus on the words we are singing.  They are a form of prayer – communication with our God.  When you direct your heart and mind on the words, it is impossible to allow stray thoughts or worries to intrude.  John Blanchard once said, “Worry and worship are mutually exclusive”.  I couldn’t agree more! The human brain cannot completely and effectively focus on two thoughts at once.  God wants our full attention when we offer Him praise and worship, whether it be through spoken prayer or songs.  Not only that, but fixing our mind on Him as we do so enables us to experience rest and peace from whatever troubles we are facing. I know from personal experience that I can begin the worship set feeling heavy hearted, but as I sing and really listen to the words, my heart begins to feel lighter. The burdens I’m bearing tumble away, leaving me awash in His presence and His peace.  Singing has such a unique way of bringing your heart, soul, mind, and strength together to focus entirely and completely on God.  In an age of distraction – singing grabs the attention of all our senses and focuses us on God, which is exactly what He wants us to do!

SUNDAY MORNING MESSAGE

The Proverbs Path – Exploring the Everyday Wisdom of Proverbs

6/12 – Hating Correction (Proverbs 12)

Do you have any friends who are really close and care about you enough to tell you the truth even if it isn’t pleasant or easy? Maybe the last time someone did that for you was when your parents spoke into your life as you grew up.  Or maybe God has blessed you with people who are willing to be honest with you – with good news or bad news – for the sake of your growth.  How we view correction and criticism is connected often in Proverbs to whether we are a wise person or a foolish person.  And there is a root cause behind everyone who hates correction.

UPCOMING SPECIAL SERVICES

June 26th

Goon is going to take over our morning service!  This will be a great chance for us to enjoy the energy and worship that happens every Sunday in the GoZone!  Bring out as many kids as you can (no matter what age) and get ready for a taste of the adventure they participate in every single week!

July 3rd

This service will be called “Tell Your Story”.  We’ve invited several Hopers to share their amazing stories of God’s work in their lives.  We know the Lord will use this time of testimony and music to inspire you, encourage you, and to strengthen you for the path you’re walking.  Come hear some incredible stories of God’s love, faithfulness, and power.  You won’t want to miss it!

MESSAGES AVAILABLE

Did you know that Sunday’s worship service is available on CD immediately following the service for FREE?  Pick up a copy for yourself or for anyone you would like to share Hope with.  Pastor Mark’s messages are also available on our website,www.hopechristianfellowship.org.

PRAYER HUDDLE

8:40 – 8:45 for Both Services

The prayer huddle is open to anyone who would like to come pray – but it is specifically intended for those who are serving on that Sunday.  So if you’re scheduled to be in kids’ ministry, greeting, in the tech booth, on worship team, or any other ministry role for a given Sunday, join us at 8:40 sharp to pray together for God’s power in each of us.  We can do all things through Christ, and nothing of worth without Him, so let’s come together each Sunday to ask for God’s Spirit to fill us and use us!

SUNDAY MORNING PRAYER TIME

8:30 – Prayer Room
Do you have a heart for prayer? Our Sunday morning prayer time is open to everyone. We pray for the services that morning and for the needs in the church. If you would like to participate, just show up!  Questions?  See Bob Baumiester.  “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20

WEDDING INVITATION

Joe Mattera and Nina Abate would like to invite everyone at Hope

to come celebrate with them as they join together in marriage.

Saturday, June 18th at 3:00 pm in the auditorium

FIRST RESPONDERS SECURITY TEAM

We are in the beginning stages of establishing a Security Team here at Hope in the (unlikely) event of an emergency situation taking place during the service.  We want to be proactive and have people and a system set in place so that we are prepared to handle whatever circumstance may arise.  If you are a ‘First Responder’ (police, security, EMT, doctor, nurse, etc.) and are interested in being a part of this team, please sign up on the sheet in the lobby.  You may also contact Mike Hartwell @ mhredeemed@gmail.com for more information.

PRISON MINISTRY SUPPORT

Once again, we have two of our very own (Jim Jefferson & Bill McGinness) participating in this unique prison ministry that reaches inmates with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through athletics. Statistics show that the vast majority of prisoners will not attend a traditional religious program such as a chapel service or Bible study. However, inmates will gladly attend sporting events at which a gospel message is shared.

The commitment to serve in this ministry requires many sacrifices on their part, not just the personal time spent away from their families, but a financial sacrifice as well.  We can help them through prayer and through giving donations as we feel the Lord’s leading.  If you would like to contribute, please see Bill or Jim and they will give you the details on how best to give.

SHORT TERM MISSION TRIP SUPPORT

One of our teens, Rachel Hackett, is going on a short mission trip to the Bahamas in July with Coastal Missions to build two schools, visit an orphanage and elderly home, and to do outreach in forums like VBS. She needs to raise $1450 by June 15th.  Giving can be done directly to Rachel or her mom, Laurie, or can be done by using a designated giving envelope put into our regular offering (mark it for Rachel Hackett).

MAY GIVING REPORT

For the month of May we averaged $7311 per week. This is above our target for the month of May ($6700) and slightly below our new giving target (starting in June) of $7375 per week.  This brings our annual average weekly giving to $7558 per week.  Thank you to each one who continues to invest in the kingdom of God and to partner with us as we work to share Jesus with as many as possible!

ENVELOPES FOR DESIGNATED GIVING

If God has laid it on your heart to give a little something extra for His kingdom, we have provided envelopes for you to do so!  These are not for your usual Sunday offering; they are for you to use if you’d like to give to a special project or ministry.  The envelopes are in a wall mounted bin next to our regular offering slot.

ONLINE GIVING TO SUPPORT HOPE

It’s easy and convenient!  Simply go to our website atwww.hopechristianfellowship.org  and click Online Giving.  Text to Give is coming soon!  More information will follow.  Contact Damon (damon.briggs@mitchellandness.com) or LaTosha (usafinancial2000@hotmail.com) Briggs with questions.

HAVE OUR ELDERS PRAY WITH YOU

The New Testament has this wonderful ministry for the elders of a church – PRAYER.  And we’d like to offer it to anyone who is in need of healing (physical or otherwise) or who needs the power of God to be at work in their lives in a special way.  If you or anyone you know would like to take advantage of this ministry, contact Pastor Mark to set up a time after one of our Sunday services for the elders to pray over you.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE

CONNECTING AND SERVING AT HOPE
